Most people are used to seeing one provider at a time, often in short visits with limited coordination between services. Gateway was built to do things differently.
We are a primary care clinic where a team of health professionals works together with you. Physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, pharmacists, dietitians, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, clinical exercise physiologist, and social workers collaborate in real time to support your health. You do not have to move between services. The team comes together for you.
Gateway is also a teaching clinic. Learners from different health disciplines are part of the team, working under supervision and contributing to your care. This is not separate from care. It is part of what makes care here more thoughtful, more connected, and continuously improving.
What makes Gateway different
Care is
team-based
You are supported by a group of professionals and learners who work together around you. Each brings a different perspective, and decisions are made collaboratively with you.
Care is shaped
with you
We take the time to understand what matters in your life and work with you to tailor care to your needs, preferences, and context.
Care is
continuous
You are connected to your team over time, allowing us to support both your immediate needs and your long-term health and goals.
Care includes
learning
and improvement
As a teaching clinic, learning is part of everyday care. Learners are supervised and supported, and their involvement brings added time, attention, and new perspectives. We also continuously improve how we work to provide better care.
Why team-based care matters
Team-based care means that different health professionals work together as one coordinated team, rather than independently.
For you, this means:
- You may meet more than one provider in a visit
- Your care plan reflects input from multiple perspectives
- Your team communicates with each other, so care feels connected
Instead of being referred from place to place, care happens together, in one setting, with a shared understanding of your needs.

What care looks like here
Your care is not built around appointments alone. It is built around relationships.
You will have a consistent care team who gets to know you over time. Depending on your needs, you may meet with more than one team member in a visit. Behind the scenes, your team is sharing information, aligning plans, and working together so that your care feels coordinated.
- You will not need to repeat your story at every step.
- You will not be navigating the system on your own.
- You are part of the team making decisions about your care.

Our role as a teaching clinic
Gateway is part of a broader effort to improve how primary care is delivered.
Learners from nursing, medicine, pharmacy, kinesiology and certified exercise physiology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, dietetics, and social work train here as part of their programs. They learn in real-world clinical settings as active members of the care team, working alongside experienced clinicians to build the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to work effectively in teams and contribute to a stronger health care system.
For patients, this means care that is attentive, collaborative, and continuously improving.

Working Together to Improve Care
Gateway is based at the University of British Columbia and works in partnership with health system and community organizations across British Columbia.
Our goal is not only to provide excellent care within the clinic, but also to contribute to improving primary care more broadly. What we learn here helps inform how team-based care can be delivered in other settings.
